You should address your first day at new job with the right attitude. Here’s some simple tips to get you going into your new challenge.

Respect the dress code

You will need to plan your outfit so that you can dress accordingly. Start by checking the company’s website and social media pages and try to find out the style. Some companies require more business formal outfits, while others tend to adopt more informal styles. In your first day at new job you should mingle with others. But it’s always better to be a little dressy than too casual.

Don’t be late in the first day at new job

You should plan ahead and make sure you are not late in your first day at new job. Study your routes and traffic flow. It is always better to show up a little early. You can always have a coffee until it’s time to start your new work. Get in 5 minutes in advance to your schedule.

Be friendly and remember names

These are the people you will be spending a lot of time with. It’s important to be friendly and one of the most important things is remembering names. That helps to engage with your colleagues. Be nice but also de prepared to set some boundaries if needed. Probably someone will invite you to lunch. Accept the invitation!

Listen and observe

It’s just your first day at new job. No one is expecting a revolution from you. Just be patient and listen…a lot. Try to understand the different mechanics, the way people relate to each other and the decision-making processes. Be humble, in the sense that you still have a lot to learn about the company and your mates. Each company has its own operational singularities. You will need to adapt. And the best way you can start is being a cautious observer. In your first day, try to understand the big picture.

Project energy and be optimistic

Again, its your first day. Many eyes will be on you. Don’t be intimidated. It’s important to be yourself. After all, everybody will know you soon. So, there’s no need to fake anything. People like real people. But remember to project good vibes and strong energy. When the day is finished, leave with a nice sentiment. Don’t be too hard on yourself. It’s perfectly understandable if you are still getting things together. Your boss and coworkers know that. And the first day at work won’t be flawless. Keep in mind it will only get better.
