What you will need

If you plan to stay and work for longer than a year, you will need to obtain a residence visa for employment before moving. The residence visa allows you to enter Portugal and apply for a residence permit. The process starts in your country of residence, before you arrive in Portugal. Having the right documents prepared in advance can make the application process easier and help you avoid unnecessary delays.

1. Employment contract or job offer: the contract or promise of a job from a Portuguese employer is an important part of the visa application. This document should clearly identify the employer, your position, salary, and other key employment conditions. You will generally need it when applying for your residence visa.
2. Work permit: your Portuguese employer must submit an application for a work permit on your behalf to the Portuguese Labor Authorities.
3. Passport and personal documents: you must have a valid passport, and generally a completed visa application, passport photographs, and other personal identification documents requested by the Portuguese consular authorities.
4. Proof of accommodation and financial resources: you will need to show where you will live in Portugal, as well as proof of sufficient means of subsistence, travel insurance and a return ticket, as you will need sufficient means to support yourself during the relocation process.
5. Professional qualifications and additional documents: you may need to provide evidence that your professional qualifications are recognized or that you meet the relevant requirements for the job offer. Depending on your individual situation, authorities may also request documents relating to health insurance, tax registration, Social Security, or other aspects of your application.

What happens after the visa is approved?

Once your residence visa is approved, you can travel to Portugal and complete the next stage of the process: applying for your residence permit. You will generally need to provide your passport and residence visa, confirmation of your employment, and information about your address in Portugal. You may also need to complete your Portuguese tax and Social Security registrations.
