Are you feeling uninspired? We leave you with five pieces of advice that can bring significant improvements to your day-to-day remote work mood.
Are you feeling uninspired at work? It’s normal, almost one year has passed since we experienced a drastic change in what was considered to be the work “normal”, and since our home and office merged in response to the pandemic. Many companies have already announced that they will continue to support remote work until summer or autumn 2021, while others are considering integrating remote work into their long-term business model, as is the case with Teleperformance that created Cloud Campus for that purpose.
Despite all the benefits that remote work has brought us, such as a better balance between personal and professional life and time savings in commuting to the office, this sudden change has brought many of us the task of transforming a temporary workspace into a permanent solution.
If are feeling uninspired or stagnant these days, we leave you with some advice that you can take to turn your home workplace into an office that boosts your mood to work.
Ergonomics
Everything revolves around the chair, even if the chair doesn’t!
Your chair, desk, and computer must be configured in a practical and comfortable way.
Get yourself a chair that allows your feet to touch the floor (a footrest bench also works) and that supports your back. Set up a dedicated space where you can replicate your office desk as much as possible. The kitchen table will do, as long as you have enough space to be in a relaxed position with the computer screen at the appropriate height and distance.
Organization
Take a few minutes every day to clean old papers, coffee mugs and lunch plates from your office. It is easy to collect memories from previous workdays, especially without the physical presence of others, to pressure us to keep our space organized. Invest in storage solutions that allow you to always have your space clean and tidy to work.
Comfort
Home offices offer a unique opportunity to personalize your workspace without the need to negotiate with your next desk colleague or be limited to the space provided by the company. Position your table near a window or in a place where you have good sun exposure. If you don’t have a room dedicated to being an office (like many of us), look for a place at home that doesn’t force you to stay at the kitchen table. An entrance hall, a space in the corridor, or reorganize the living room and bedroom furniture so that you can have space for that purpose and just for you. Once you have your own space to work, decorate it so that you are always comfortable. One or another decorative element, such as wallpaper, photographs, candles with calming scents or a rug to outline the space, can help your focus and relaxation during the workday.
Nature
The presence of nature, whether indoors or outdoors, has a positive impact on our work performance. According to a 10-year research project conducted by psychologists at the University of Exeter, observing an indoor plant or vegetation around your office can increase productivity by up to 15%. Likewise, a 2015 study found that active interaction with indoor plants can reduce physical and emotional stress. Buying or growing houseplants is not only a fun quarantine activity, but it can also benefit your job performance.
Schedules
Setting schedules is a crucial part of getting the most out of your day. Having a start and an end time for your daily workday is as important as separating professional and personal life. Scheduling tasks is also essential to help you prioritize your work and meet deadline goals.
Take breaks! Taking breaks helps keep your mind fresh and energized. If it isn’t possible, for the time being, to leave the house, move away from the computer for 15 minutes and change rooms or go to the window from time to time. These details can give your mind the rest you need and can spark your creativity.
If you feel tense, doing some exercises and stretches is very helpful.
Tip: Answering calls while standing can make a huge difference in moving your joints for a few minutes.
These are some small changes that can improve your professional performance and make you feel more inspired, whether for those who are provisionally at home or those who have already decided to adopt remote work in the long term or definitely. Taking the time to customize your home office will have lasting benefits. Implementing any of these changes will inspire you and give you the energy you need in this unique moment. Despite everything, the pandemic emphasized the importance of taking care of ourselves physically, emotionally but also at work.
If you are still feeling uninspired to work, even after making these changes in your workplace at home, then why not consider a job change?
