Who needs a Portuguese Visa?
This is the first thing you need to know when searching for Portugal immigration requirements. Nationals from the EU/EEA and Switzerland can typically enter using their identity cards, other foreign visitors will need a passport that is valid for a minimum of six months and a Portuguese visa if required.
The Portuguese embassy in your country of residence normally processes the visas, and the Portuguese Immigration Office is responsible for issuing Portuguese resident permits.
Which Portuguese visa?
There are several types of Visa or residence permit in Portugal, and that is the first thing you need to find out when you decide to move to Portugal. It depends on different aspects like your nationality, the purpose of your visit and how long you’re going to stay.
You can apply for the Schengen short-stay visa if you’re a tourist visiting or intend to stay for less than 3 months. This allows you to stay in the country for 90 days.
If you’re staying for a long period of time, you can ask for a long-stay visa. This allows a temporary stay for 4 months with multiple entries. This type of visa can be granted if you have medical treatment in Portugal, transfer of workers, temporary employment, to conduct scientific research, among others.
Finally, the Portuguese residence visa. This gives you 4 months in the country so you can request a residence permit. It will be granted if, for example, you’re employed or studying in Portugal.
Visa application
The first thing you need to do is to fill in a Portuguese visa application form and submit it to the Portuguese embassy or consulate in your country.
You will also need to provide some documentation along with your application: 2 passport photos, sometimes it’s required a copy of your return ticket reservation, passport and copies of previous visas, cover letter stating the purpose of your visit, travel insurance, flight dates and times, accommodation plans, proof of sufficient funds, civil status and economic status. You may also be asked to present documentation related to the nature of your stay.
Visa fees
You will need to pay a non-refundable fee for your visa. These are the values in the year 2019. Schengen Short Stay Visa: 60€; Temporary Stay Visa: 75€; Long Stay Visa: 99€ and the Airport Transit Visa: 60€.
This fee is reduced to 35€ for children aged 6 to 11 years old and for nationals from Georgia, Kosovo, Russia, and Ukraine. There is no Portuguese visa fee for people traveling for educational or training purposes, children aged under six, researchers of developing countries and representatives of non-profit organizations under 25 years old who are participating in events organized by non-profit organizations.
