Beyond the job

Healthy habits for a more ergonomic workplace

July 3, 2026

A healthy workplace is more than a comfortable office—it is an investment in people, productivity, and long-term success. Sitting at your desk for hours on end, a poor workstation setup and repetitive movements can contribute to discomfort, fatigue, and preventable injuries that affect both employee well-being and business performance. By prioritizing workplace ergonomics, organizations can create an environment where employees stay focused, energized, and better equipped to perform at their best.

If you are working from home, creating an ergonomic workplace does not require a complete office redesign—small, intentional improvements can deliver meaningful results.

Follow the checklist below to setup the ideal ergonomic workstation and working habits that will help you reduce the risk of common office injuries.

Chair positioning

Adjust the chair so your feet rest flat on the floor (or on a footrest), with knees bent at roughly a 90-degree angle and your lower back fully supported by the chair’s lumbar support.

Monitor placement

Position the monitor directly in front of you, about an arm’s length away, with the top of the screen at or slightly below eye level to help keep your neck in a neutral position.

Keyboard and mouse

Place both close enough that your elbows remain near your sides and bent at approximately 90 degrees, while your wrists stay straight and relaxed during typing and mouse use.

Desk organization

Keep frequently used items such as your phone, notebook, and documents within easy reach to minimize unnecessary stretching or twisting throughout the day.

Movement breaks and stretching

Stand, stretch, or walk for a few minutes every 30 to 60 minutes to encourage circulation, reduce muscle stiffness, and relieve strain caused by prolonged sitting. Here are some stretches you can try:

    • Rolling your shoulders backward and forward several times to release upper-body tightness.
    • Stretch your neck by tilting your head toward each shoulder, holding the position for 15 – 20 seconds without forcing the movement.
    • Stand up to stretch your back by reaching both arms overhead, taking a gentle side bend.
