Lisbon is preparing to host another edition of the Web Summit. The event kicks off on November 4th and, once again, expectations are at their peak.

Web Summit 2019 will be the fourth edition taking place in Lisbon. The Portuguese capital is thus preparing to host this mega-event whose mission is to identify disruptions and point the way forward.

When Paddy Cosgrave agreed with the Portuguese Government that the Conference would remain in Portugal until 2028, the confirmation was given: Portugal is one of the leading countries in the technological “revolution”. And the Web Summit is one of the most evident expressions of this fact.

In the last edition, in 2018, it is estimated that the return to the country amounted to 300 million euros. According to the organization, the Conference brought together more than 1,800 startups, 1,500 investors, 1,200 speakers and 2,600 journalists. 159 countries were represented and visits to the venue reached 70,000 people.

Access to the Web Summit 2019 is simple, since the event takes place in the Altice Arena, a concert hall that benefits from the proximity of the Oriente Station, where various transports meet. That’s exactly the purpose of your trip: to get to Oriente Station.

You can get there through the modern metro network that serves the city of Lisbon, by train or taking the buses numbered 728, 744, 782. Of course, you can also choose to go by taxi or via a transport platform, as the subject is technology.

Web Summit 2019 is just a few minutes away from Oriente Station. And you can enjoy the beautiful area of Parque das Nações, built on the occasion of the 1998 Universal Exhibition, which is currently one of the noblest and modern areas of Lisbon.

It is also very important to download the Web Summit app, which is available for both IOS and Android. The app will serve to enter the enclosure but also to get oriented regarding the different lectures and tracks (thematic areas). These will not be limited to a single stage: they will navigate between the Altice Arena and the four FIL (Feira Internacional de Lisboa) pavilions. The app can be extremely useful to consult all the schedules of the event and build the itinerary of your interest.

High Tech Portugal

The choice of Portugal, and specifically of Lisbon, is not innocent. The country has been rising consistently in the rankings of technological countries, as it has unique conditions for the development of business activities, especially in the field of technology.

Among 140 countries, Portugal is ranked 19th in terms of infrastructure quality, according to the Global Competitiveness Report 2018 of the World Economic Forum.

It also benefits from excellent internet speeds – the fourth-best in the world and second in Europe, says the OECD, and from a labour market favourable to “experimentation”, i.e. moderate salaries that can be decisive for companies that are in the start-up phase.

In addition, there is a positive technological environment in the country, as a result of the political will to promote entrepreneurship, particularly in terms of technology, the economic recovery of recent years and the work developed at university level: Portugal is the fifth country with the highest number of science and technology graduates per thousand inhabitants, considering the age group between 20 and 29 years old.

Finally, a note to the fact that Portugal has been considered one of the safest countries in the world, according to the World Peace Index, and the country with the best quality of life in the world – Expat Index 2019. In addition to these distinctions, the country has been ranked as the Best European Destination by the World Travel Awards over the last three years.
